Is a Dedicated Impact Wrench Better Than an Impact Driver?

First and foremost, I want to say that we really don't use impact wrenches that often, it's just not a tool we would really ever need doing what we do. If you are a mechanic or maybe even a metal framer, I could totally see that this tool is like your baby and maybe even your holy grail.
With that said, we wanted to see the power behind the Ryobi 18V Impact Wrench. We really were curious about what's the difference between this and just a normal impact driver that we use every single day. And not just put it up against another Ryobi drill, but a DeWalt one that is a mid range drill.
So what we did is, we used the stopwatch to time how long it took to drive about an 8" lag. The tools are all on the same setting and batteries are fully charged. We used a 4 aH battery for the Ryobi drills and a 5 aH DeWalt battery because we didn't have a 4 aH, so that could have a factor into the results. First up, the impact wrench which came in at 17.53 seconds. Then, we moved onto the Ryobi impact driver which was at 13.83 seconds. The DeWalt driver was a 16.29.
In conclusion, they are all seconds away from each other. If you are a person who loves to have dedicated tools for each application, then you go for it! Love that! But for everything we do, a tool with a dual purpose is more for us.
The whole purpose for this post was to try out the Ryobi Impact Wrench and here is a little bit more into the specs of this.
• 3/8 in. square anvil with hog ring to easily change sockets
• Impact Mechanism produces 150 ft.lb. of torque and up to 3,400 impacts per minute (IPM) for a variety of heavy-duty applications
• Powerful motor allows for tightening or loosening various nuts and bolts
• 3-Speed Selector Switch offers greater control over a wide range of fastening applications.
If you want to see the whole test we did, we have a video on it over on our Instagram, you can watch it here!
